How I stack rewards on Grubhub orders

I basically eat my way to award flights, and one of my favorite slightly nerdy ways to earn points on my meals is through a nicely stackable mix of Grubhub credits, Amazon Prime benefits, and shopping rewards. 

Grubhub is already a useful way to redeem the Amex Gold’s dining credit or $10 of Bilt Cash each month. I avoid delivery, not just because the service fees and tips can drive up the costs, but also because, as an Amazon Prime member, I can also earn 5% in Grubhub+ credit on pickup orders (or $0 delivery fees). On top of that, I usually see 1% cash back available through Rakuten (which I take as Bilt Points), an offer which pops up automatically when available via my browser extension. That’s all in addition to whatever rewards my credit card offers on the purchase.

With the right card, all that combined could add up to 10% or more in rewards on Grubhub purchases.

It’s getting even better now, because Amazon Prime members like myself can get a $20 discount on a $30+ Grubhub order through October 5. That’s a great bonus on top of the various ways you can usually earn or save extra with Grubhub. So if you’re a Prime member, this could be a great time to check out those Grubhub benefits.

Correction 🛠️

Get a free checked bag on United with the Aeroplan Card. In last week’s newsletter, I said the Aeroplan Card’s automatic elite status didn’t include a checked bag when flying United. It actually does—I just missed that on the benefits page. Sorry for the mistake! That could make the card more useful for occasional United travelers who can’t reach status with United, although it doesn’t really change my overall assessment.

New quarterly bonuses coming on certain cards. The Chase Freedom Flex and Discover it will have new bonus categories starting in October—don’t forget to activate if you have one in your wallet. The highlight? An insane (albeit capped) 7% back on dining with the Flex. 

Revaluation 📈

Qatar Airways walks back award restrictions. The airline had made it almost impossible to book award flights for others, but the onerous restrictions have been lifted. This program is too complicated for my tastes, but more viable redemption options are always better. (Miles Talk)

Chase → Marriott (70%). This is a record bonus, but while it is potentially useful if you are actively planning travel and can find a redemption that makes sense, Marriott points aren’t too valuable, so transfers aren’t very compelling even at this ratio.
